Welcome to Brownthwaite Hardy Plants, a traditional working nursery in the beautiful Lune Valley, on the Cumbria - Lancashire border. Follow the brown tourist signs from the A65 (signed Brownthwaite Nurseries) between Cowan Bridge and Kirkby Lonsdale, to visit a treasure trove of hardy plants grown at altitude in the foothills of the Pennines.

Plants are propagated and grown on the premises without heat to promote hardiness. A wide range of hardy perennials are grown, old favourites as well as some of the newer introductions. Also grown are a range of Hostas large and small, old and new, a selection of grasses and sedges are also available in a range of sizes colours and for various situations, ferns are available to suit most positions. A small expanding range of alpines are also on sale.

Specialities at the moment are Primula Auricula and Hydrangeas. Auriculas are available in most colours and forms,- Border, Alpine and Show Hydrangeas, especially Hydrangea serrata cultivars are propagated and grown on the nursery (approximately 20 varieties at present) Hydrangea arborescens, Hydrangea paniculata, are also propagated, smaller numbers of interesting species and cultivars are also available.
